Na Forum Romanum, przy via Sacra, między bazyliką Maksencjusza a kościołem San Lorenzo in Miranda, znajduje się jeden z tych starożytnych zabytków, które zostały zachowane w niemal pierwotnej formie. Ceglana budowla w kształcie cylindra do dziś budzi zainteresowanie badaczy, którzy starają się poznać jej przeznaczenie. Kim był Romulus, któremu miała być dedykowana? Czy cudownie wniebowziętym założycielem Rzymu, który stoczył tu walkę z Sabinami? A może synem Maksencjusza – tragicznie zmarłym młodzieńcem, którego ojciec nakazał ubóstwić? Legendy przeplatają się z nielicznymi faktami, które znamy, a te z opiniami badaczy, które wciąż się zmieniają.

Na Forum Romanum, przy via Sacra, między bazyliką Maksencjusza a kościołem San Lorenzo in Miranda, znajduje się jeden z tych starożytnych zabytków, które zostały zachowane w niemal pierwotnej formie. Ceglana budowla w kształcie cylindra do dziś budzi zainteresowanie badaczy, którzy starają się poznać jej przeznaczenie. Kim był Romulus, któremu miała być dedykowana? Czy cudownie wniebowziętym założycielem Rzymu, który stoczył tu walkę z Sabinami? A może synem Maksencjusza – tragicznie zmarłym młodzieńcem, którego ojciec nakazał ubóstwić? Legendy przeplatają się z nielicznymi faktami, które znamy, a te z opiniami badaczy, które wciąż się zmieniają.

Zanim jednak powrócimy do patrona budowli i czasu jej powstania, stańmy przed jej wejściem od strony via Sacra i spróbujmy odtworzyć jej elegancję i architektoniczne wyrafinowanie. Rampa schodów wiedzie nas do monumentalnych, odlanych z brązu wrót flankowanych przez dwie porfirowe kolumny podtrzymujące architraw. Po dwóch stronach głównego wejścia znajdowały się niegdyś dwie budowle na planie prostokąta zakończone absydami. Miały osobne wejścia, fasady wychodzące na via Sacra i boki połączone z licem głównego cylindra rodzajem absydy. Obecnie zobaczymy jedynie fragmenty okalających wejście ruin. Jedyną większą pozostałością owych budowli są znajdujące się (po prawej stronie) korynckie kolumny z zachowanym na jednej z nich fragmentem belkowania.

Geneza świątyni sięga czasów republiki rzymskiej, kiedy to w miejscu tym oddawano cześć Jowiszowi Statorowi. Co się z nią działo później – nie wiemy. W I wieku naszej ery był to westybul (przedsionek) znajdującej się nieopodal kompleksu świątyni Pokoju (Templum Pacis) wzniesionej przez cesarza Wespazjana. Tędy prowadziła do niej droga z via Sacra. Co stało się na początku IV wieku? Badacze są w sumie zgodni, że Maksencjusz, który podjął się rekonstrukcji i modernizacji niektórych obiektów na tym terenie, nakazał odnowić również i ten budynek. W średniowieczu pojawiły się informacje o istniejącej w tym miejscu świątyni Romulusa, co zrodziło przypuszczenia, że mogła ona być poświęcona ubóstwionemu synowi Maksencjusza – Romulusowi, ale hipoteza ta nie znajduje potwierdzenia. Badacze uważają, że główny przybytek służył wtedy Jowiszowi, natomiast dwa boczne stanowiły miejsce kultu bóstw domowych, zwanych Penatami, będących w panteonie   rzymskim strażniczkami ogniska domowego i spiżarni. Czy jednak ich posągi znalazły się w tym miejscu dopiero za czasów Maksencjusza, który kazał wznieść pobliską bazylikę Maksencjusza, rozbierając świątynię poświęconą Penatom? Najprawdopodobniej tak. Wiemy natomiast z całą pewnością, że z tego czasu pochodzą drzwi z brązu i zdobiące je czerwone kolumny. Brama ta jest jedną z dwóch oryginalnych wrót starożytnego Rzymu, zachowanych do naszych czasów, a w dodatku znajdujących się w pierwotnym miejscu swego przeznaczenia. Druga, pochodząca z Kurii, znajduje się w portalu bazyliki San Giovanni in Laterano.


Po bitwie przy moście Mulwijskim i klęsce Maksencjusza w 312 roku władzę w mieście i cesarstwie zachodnim przejął Konstantyn, który (według zachowanej inskrypcji) przywrócił w tym miejscu kult Jowisza. Najpewniej jednak dokończył dzieło rozpoczęte przez Maksencjusza i zatarł w ten sposób kolejny ślad po swym rywalu.

W VI wieku budowla stała się częścią (przedsionkiem) ufundowanego przez Teodoryka Wielkiego kościoła Santi Cosma e Damiano, dedykowanego dwóm lekarzom – Kosmie i Damianowi. Dalsza jego część zajmowała przylegające doń, prostokątne pomieszczenie biblioteki należącej onegdaj do kompleksu nieistniejącej dziś świątyni Pokoju – po prostu wyburzono znajdujące się między nimi drzwi. W głębi pomieszczenia także dziś dostrzeżemy przejście prowadzące do tejże świątyni. Sam kościół był wówczas dość wysoki. Ów przedsionek, który interesuje nas najbardziej, zdobiły we wnętrzu marmurowe płyty, które zdjęto w średniowieczu, aby stworzyć miejsce dla fresków chrześcijańskich, powstałych w XIII wieku i w znacznym stopniu zachowanych. W XVII wieku, za czasów papieża Urbana VIII, nastąpiła przedziwna modernizacja kościoła, prowadząca do podziału jego wnętrza na kościół dolny i górny. Wtedy to wzmocniono grożące zawaleniem mury, a podłogę kościoła – ze względu na powodzie – podniesiono o kilka metrów, ale tylko w części nawy i absydy, przedsionek pozostawiając na pierwotnym poziomie via Sacra. Kościół dolny (dawny przedsionek) od strony via Sacra zamknięto i przekształcono w kryptę z prowadzącymi do niej schodami. Przeznaczono ją do przechowania relikwii legendarnych świętych bliźniaków: Marcelego (Marcelliano) i Marka, a także relikwii Kosmy i Damiana. Od tej pory do kościoła wchodziło się wejściem bocznym, a po wybudowaniu w XX wieku via dei Fori Imperiali, od strony tejże reprezentacyjnej ulicy.


Po wiekach zamknięcia, a potem prac konserwatorskich, zakończonych dopiero w 2008 roku, antyczną budowlę o tajemniczej proweniencji można obecnie podziwiać, wchodząc do niej od strony Forum Romanum. Gdy stojąc w niej, wzniesiemy głowę w kierunku wielkiego okna, dojrzymy kościół Santi Cosma e Damiano.
